Paul Hoeffler

Paul Hoeffler's photographs document the American Jazz scene with sensitivity, humor and humanity. His passion for music and people radiates from all his work. Paul captured the atmospheric ambiance of a club, as well as the talent and personality of the performers and his style reminds us of the work of great photojournalists such as Robert Capa or Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Paul was born in Buffalo in 1937. He studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology, with Minor White as his mentor. His work has been featured in numerous publications and documentaries such as "Dedicated to Chaos" by Ken Burns. He also collaborated on CD covers with the prestigious Verve Record and Blue Note labels.
Paul Hoeffler moved from New York to Toronto in 1971 where he carried on his passion for photography and music until his death in 2005.

Here is some background on the Marie’s and Blue Sun Images working relationship with Paul.

The first time Paul invited me to his studio I felt like Ali Baba entering the cave of the 40 thieves. It was almost impossible to walk into his studio without stumbling upon a box full of gems. The gems were prints so powerfully atmospheric that I didn't understand why Paul was described almost exclusively as a Jazz photographer, because his work exhibited the qualities of the greatest post-war photojournalists. His photographs capture soulfully a snap of post war American history. The studio also had boxes of films he had never developed, thousands of contact sheets and all the records he had shot the covers for.

It was clear that Paul was an unsung hero of photography, well respected within the Jazz scene, but too little known by the rest of the world. In answer to that, the next logical step was to create a website dedicated to his work. Paul was involved in the first stages of the creation of Blue Sun Images but unfortunately never saw its completion. Life's twists and turns meant that we had to wait before launching Blue Sun Images. It has taken a long time, but it is never too late to discover or rediscover a genius.
